aka, my friend Erwin, better known to me as the Indo-Chinaman.
If you have ever tried Dim Sum I'm sure you would agree that is it quite delicious. For those of you who have gone veg*n since your last Dim Sum visit, like myself, will find it very difficult to go to an authentic Dim Sum restaurant and find anything remotely veg*n. I was in luck this past Saturday because Erwin and I meet for some yummy veg*n Dim Sum!
It all began with a lot of hype, a series of 3-4 ichat conversations leading to the big day. We discussed what we would wear to this great Saturday afternoon event. Everything from faux fur coats and pimp hats to authentic Chinese red dresses with monkey designs on them...most of these Erwin's ideas of course, I can't take all the credit. We decided to met at Grand Central Station in front of the huge touristy clock tower at 1pm, I was late of course, no surprise there. None the less we finally meet and began our journey to Chinatown where we would feast at "Buddha Bodai".
We got off the 6 train at Canal street and walked our way down, passing fresh durian fruit outside local Chinese markets, street carts serving fried rice and many many boba cafes, mmmmm. We finally arrived at this semi-hidden location around 1:45pm, we were seated rather quickly, as the place wasn't all that packed...we were both very excited. The server came and handed us a menu, although the usual Dim Sum tradition is for the servers to come around with carts full of tasty foods, here at "Buddha Bodai" you instead get a list of the featured Dim Sum and tally what you want; dishes range from small to large to special. After sipping on our complementary tea and after much contemplation, we finally decided on what to order. We got:
1. Cantonese style steamed dumplings
2. Rice paper veggie meat rolls
3. Chicken and Shark fin congee
4. Chinese Broccoli
5. BBQ Pork
All in all they were all very tasty, but my favorite was the Chinese Broccoli and Rice paper veggie meat rolls, yumm.
After a very filling meal and 2 hours of overstaying our welcome, we decided to loss some poundage by playing a quick game of Dance Dance Revolution at the arcade across the street. We each played a round, and I put on my dancing shoes to the likes of Janet Jackson, although I can't remember the name of the song. We decided that after losing all those calories we needed them back, so we went for some Boba, otherwise known as Bubble Tea for those East coasters. Erwin got a Milk Black Tea Boba, and I got a Lychee Slushi boba drink, my first time trying that particular slushi and if I had to get it again, I indeed would. The kind people at this boba cafe gave me a card that stated "Buy 5 bubble teas and get the 6th one free with an additional 20% of your purchase", which told me that these were indeed great business people because I am now motivated in getting my free boba.
We left that joint and moved on to our next location...the park! I do love my parks. Much to our surprise there was a mini concert going on. The park was full of people that day, many thanks to the gorgeous weather, so we decided to take a little breather from our munch feast and enjoy the tunes of the little traditional Asian sounding band. Erwin finished his boba and I decided that I could not finish the rest of mine because if I did I would either a) become a rollie pollie and roll back to my apartment because I was so full or b) go into a food coma and sleep the rest of the day...so with that, we decided to trek back to the subway and head to our destinations, Erwin back to the upper east side and me, back to good 'ol Queens.
The much anticipated Dim Sum event was more succesful than planned, in fact it was so succesful that our next outting is already in the works...Mexican food.
