I was recently invited to a viewing of Disney's "Enchanted" by my sister-in-law while I was visiting my family in California for the holidays and of course said yes. I went into this not really knowing what to expect, in fact I had no clue what this movie was about nor did I know it was a Disney movie...which if I had known I may have been able to prepare for by getting my emotions right and ready...by which I mean, trying to control the nostalgia that would surface and being able to cope with the sad tale that would eventually end in sad goodness that of course only happens in movies. None the less I got into the car with my two brothers, sister-in-law and the two children aka my niece and nephew, and we were off to a land where I was about to develop a dire need to find myself living a Disney movie.
The movie started off classic Disney style. A lovelorn female opens the screen, singing her humble story to a series of cute fluffy animated animals. She sings her tale of wanting to find her true love so that she can finally receive her true loves kiss. The prince finally hears her cry and wisps off to find his true love as well. Alas! They meet and now, happily ever after?? Not quite yet...To make a 65 minute movie short Giselle, the leading female, finds herself banished away into a world that is certainly more cruel than hers; having to leave her prince the same day they meet and also the same day of their wedding. Luckily in the cruel streets of NY, she meets a kind stranger who helps her find her way and herself.
Despite the fact that this movie is geared for children and adults with childhood hopes still brewing within them, I am not ashamed to admit that I absolutely loved this movie and was indeed enchanted by it. It brought up those nostalgic feelings of childhood crushes, current situations and how can I forget, my endless hopes that someday, unexpectedly, my life will break out into a musical and that the made up tunes always bubbling in my thoughts will finally be disclosed to the world and the loved ones around me...of course this shouldn't be a one person show, everyone will sing and dance! But to be true to myself, I know this situation is meant mainly for the big screen and the little screen in me will most likely remain...unrequited and tame.
Until Disney and I meet again, I leave you with my favorite clip from my hopeless lovelorn movie "Enchanted".
