It's true, I am.
Since deciding to move back to California, I have also decided that in my last month and a half of being in New York I now have to cram everything in that I somehow managed to not do in my past 6 years here. What can I say I'm a procrastinator.
In any case, the good ol' housemate Mr. Azeem aka Ace aka Hey You as I like to call him, is playing in a pop punk fest with his band The Steinways. Insubordination Fest takes place in Baltimore Maryland and comes but once a year. And so I've heard, many many people travel from all over just to attend this yearly music festival...I suppose I don't blame them, there are a lot of awesome bands lined up. This year, it will be slightly different because instead of hearing all the stories of the crazy antics that went on I will instead be witnessing these shenanigans first hand.
So, on the weekend of June 27th, I will not be able to be found at my usual spot (the living room couch) I will actually be on my way to Baltimore via a megabus. So for that entire weekend after much unnecessary boozing, lots of jumping around, slurred song lyrics, undernourishment, sweat, sleeplessness and best of all, tons of good music I will finally be able to declare myself a surviver of Insubordination Fest.
It isn't every Thursday I get to wake up with bruises on my lower back, hair reeking of cigarettes, bed covers twisted onto the floor, the remnant taste of Pabst Blue Ribbon, the beeping sound of the dying fire alarm going off as the continuous beeping of my alarm clock adds the final touch to the lethargy that awaits the rest of my day...and the worst part is its almost 9 and I actually have work at 9:30, the last thing I want to do, is get out of bed...I'm too far from not being a Brooklyn Hipster to lead that type of lifestyle.
"Don Pedros", is where Hardcore Punk met Power Pop Punk yesterday night in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. If you've never been to Williamsburg, well I suggest you make it out there sometime, mainly to get a taste of the obscure phenomenon of a culture that has somehow managed to spring up like an irritating rash on your wee bottom.
I arrived at this joint at around 8:45, no need for the subway when you have handy dandy house mates who have access to cars, thanks Ace. After a scenic tour of queens (really we were just lost, but Ace wouldn't admit it because men never admit they are lost) and a crappy visit to the land of doom, McDonalds, we arrived just in time to chat it up a bit outside the venue where kids dressed in skinny jeans and tight black shirts smoked their lungs punk black. After security kindly let us know that we couldn't hang out outside due to cranky neighbors the party moved inside where we were greeted by the first band, loud, unkempt hardcore punk. The singer wore the tightest cord shorts ever, a black tshirt, authentic faded blue vans and eye glasses reminiscent of our good ol' Buddy Holly. Much to my surprise this band "sucked" according to Ace, although to my untrained hardcore musical ears, they sounded just fine. Their set ended and on came Disnihil (sp? sorry Tom) my other house mates band. This was my first time catching them live, and they were great!...and I'm not saying this because I am bias =).
Cloak/Dagger pronounced CloakDagger was third in line and they were pretty awesome. I stood by the corner where the stair well meet the downstairs dungeon where the real partying was going...I watched eagerly as they began their set, it was clear, tight, and none the less hardcore with a hint of not just "hey yeahhh i don't have to just bang my head to this sound, I can move my arms too because it has a dancy twist to it". Finally the cause of my morning bruises...The Ergs! who always rule the school. If you've never heard of the ergs! just think of The Decendents. Nothing but sweet pop punk that'll make you want to jump and go wild...until they play a Minor Threat song and Ariana gets pushed up against a high raised booth type seat and gets her lower back bruised up to which she responds with Aaaaaoooowwww....ok enough woe is me, back to the bands. Although the sound system sucked arse, and the PA was blowing away my last hopes of retaining my already horrible hearing, this band kicked ass! No matter what your musical preference, The Ergs! never fail to please an audience, you should totally check em out. Soo it's friday, and its not really Hump Day anymore, but what the hey.
